What’s Happening
After a long time of construction, Georgia Department of Transportation says it’s time to move traffic to the new Liberty Expressway overpass in Northwest Albany. As many drivers have experienced, traffic has been diverted to sets of temporary lanes during construction.
But now contractors say it’s time to move things back to the main road. In an announcement, GDOT says expressway traffic will be moved to travel over the new overpass full-time again on Tuesday September 10th.
After the changeover, the temporary lanes will be removed so construction can continue on the new roundabout intersection and connecting road between Westover Blvd at the Albany Mall and Ledo Road.
GDOT asks drivers to please slow down when approaching the new traffic pattern, as construction is still happening.
What’s Next
The whole project of the new overpass and roundabout construction is expected to be complete by the end of 2024. Drivers along Westover Blvd have recently been able to drive around half of the new roundabout under construction.
Once completed, this will be Albany’s first major roundabout in place. Roundabouts, also known as traffic circles, are an efficient and popular way for some cities and towns to manage traffic at intersections.
