Taking time off of work is necessary. But what if you want to stay open? Read on to see an example of how to ethically stay open on a holiday \u2014 that is, if you choose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this example we are looking at <a href=\"https:\/\/229life.com\/we-live-here-inside-albanys-coffee-scene\/\">Temp Coffee<\/a>, that recently posted on Facebook they would be open on Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"819\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/229life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/temp-thanksgiving-post-819x1024.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5736\" style=\"width:600px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/229life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/temp-thanksgiving-post-819x1024.webp 819w, https:\/\/229life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/temp-thanksgiving-post-240x300.webp 240w, https:\/\/229life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/temp-thanksgiving-post-120x150.webp 120w, https:\/\/229life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/temp-thanksgiving-post-768x960.webp 768w, https:\/\/229life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/temp-thanksgiving-post-696x870.webp 696w, https:\/\/229life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/temp-thanksgiving-post-1068x1335.webp 1068w, https:\/\/229life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/temp-thanksgiving-post.webp 1170w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 819px) 100vw, 819px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Naturally, some comments on the post were sympathetic to employees, saying they wished workers didn\u2019t have to work on Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But then management at Temp Coffee responded and clarified how they were choosing to open for the holiday: they asked their employees first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe appreciate your concern for the well-being of our staff. We agree that our employees should be with their families if that\u2019s how they wish to spend the holiday. We always leave it up to our employees if they want to work on Thanksgiving day. If no one wants to then we close the shop. The employees working are there because they want to be,\u201d an admin posted in response to a comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By beginning with employees wants in this real world example, the business is able to effectively balance employee wants and needs with the opportunity cost of being open for business on a holiday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is just one example of many, and is used in this article because it was seen first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m thankful for all of the people who work across various industries, professions, and services who don\u2019t have as much of a choice in the holidays they have off, and still show up. I\u2019ve been in them before, and will be in the future.
