4 Massive Murals Worth A Visit In Albany, GA

0

The Mural Experience

Standing in front of larger-than-life art is an experience like few others. And the Good Life City has an incredible offering of murals you can visit and enjoy. Check out these 4 massive murals worth a visit in Albany, GA.

Farmer, Field and Animals

For the first mural on this journey we’re traveling straight into the heart of Downtown Albany. Located on the corner of Jefferson St. and Oglethorpe Ave. an unassuming white building is transformed into art.

Painted across three different planes of view, the mural captures a South Georgia farming landscape. The work features bold sunset hues of orange and purple, gracing figures of two farmers, two mules, and rows upon rows of vegetation. The plants in the painting resemble rows of recently planted corn.

South Georgia is no stranger to agriculture, with many farms across the region making up the state’s part of what is known as the Sun Belt. Other murals across the region pay homage to the area’s agricultural roots and farming presence, but this one is Downtown Albany’s main feature.

The untitled work is by Christopher Johnson. It was completed in 2018. You can find the work at 317 W Oglethorpe Blvd, Albany, GA 31701.

Beautiful Butterflies

The next mural in this list is one of the most recent large art completions made in the city. Located in Northwest Albany, a massive collection of butterflies rest on the side of the Bottoms Up shopping center building.

Painted with different varieties across a white background, the mural captures definitive details of the beautiful silent flying creatures. A total of 16 individual butterflies make up the massive piece of art. The familiar orange colors of the Monarch butterfly are immediately noticeable, along with bold and bright colors from nearly every other shade of the spectrum.

The title of this mural is “Small Things” by Christopher Johnson. It was completed in 2020. You can find the work at 719 N Westover Blvd, Albany, GA 31707.

Curious Characters in the Woods

The next mural on our list is back toward Downtown Albany, but not quite. Located in north central Albany, near Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, a large mural stands in front of an open grass lawn.

Painted across the street-facing side of the building is a mural of characters sitting and standing in a setting of woods, with a single road going through the middle of it.

The scene of woods and the characters in it is lush with bright and deep shades of green. The characters of the mural are all wearing outfits similar to a jester’s costume, but without the hat.

The work is untitled and doesn’t display a completion date. You can find the work at 520 N Jefferson St, Albany, GA 31701.

Beautiful Birds and Good Life City Vibes

The last mural on this list is also the brightest piece of art covered here. Right in the middle of Albany, just off Slappey Blvd is a massive mural. It captures the nature of local cranes that live across the region and highlights what makes Albany, the Good Life City that it is.

Located on the side of the Aspire building, four larger-than-life cranes grace the South wall against a blue background. Each crane consists of delicate detail and is adorned with different pieces of Albany history and culture.

Popular phrases like “The Good Life City” detail the inside of each crane. Another showcases the phrase “Semper Fi,” referencing Albany’s Marine Corps Logistics Base. Others show more playful phrases like “The Benny.”

The title of this mural is “Life is Beautiful” by Christopher Johnson and is not dated. You can find the work at 321 William Jr St, Albany, GA 31707.

This collection is just a small sample of murals across Albany and across the 229 area. The majority of these murals were completed by Christopher Johnson, who still paints murals across the South. You can learn more about his work HERE.

Country Song ‘Rich Men North Of Richmond’ Bashes DC Elites, Gets Millions Of Plays

0

Oliver Anthony’s soulful country voice seems to be resonating well past the hills where he is from. His song “Rich Men North Of Richmond” is being played all over the country since its debut on YouTube.

The country ballad, which criticizes Washington politicians, surpassed 5 million YouTube views and 300,000+ likes in its first four days.

In the song, Anthony puts to music what he feels are the concerns of America’s working class. The song’s gritty, down to earth lyrics compare real Main Street life and the world inside Washington DC’s Beltway. He sings he wishes “politicians would look out for minors, and not just minors on an island somewhere.”

The song’s lyrics are raw and not curse-free, continuing with “I’ve been selling my soul/ Working all day/ Overtime hours/ For bulls— pay,” and “Lord, we got folks in the street, ain’t got nothing to eat/ And the obese milking welfare..”

Listen to the song

Striking a chord with viewers

Comments on YouTube have been pouring in since the song’s debut, expressing support for the ballad’s message.

“This is honestly one of the most powerful songs I’ve ever heard!” said one commenter. “Your voice is amazing, powerful, but I can also hear the sadness and pain you have dealt with..”

“39 year old Marine vet over here wiping tears away,” another commenter added. “I felt connected to your soul on this one brother.”

Social media shares

As the song gained traction online, it also began to be shared across large social media accounts by people like Joe Rogan, Matt Walsh, and others.

On Friday, “Rich Men North of Richmond” was trending on Twitter with more than 46,000 posts.

Oliver Anthony shared a post on Twitter thanking everyone for such a big response: “Rich Men North of Richmond has been uploaded to all major streaming platforms and will show up there in a few days. Im still in a state of shock at the outpouring of love I’ve seen in the comments, messages and emails. I’m willing to respond to everyone as quickly as possible.”

Topping the charts

On the same Friday, August 11th “Rich Men North of Richmond” was at the top of Apple Music’s New Country list. On Saturday it was still in the number two spot.

You can find and follow Anthony on Twitter/X HERE.

According to the song’s description, Oliver Anthony “wants to give hope to the working class and your average hard working young man who may have lost hope in the grind of trying to get by.”

In addition, it says Anthony resides in Farmville, VA with his 3 dogs and a plot of land he plans on turning into a small farm to raise livestock.
