Villa Gargano Owner: ‘We’re Back’ – Iconic Albany Restaurant Open Again

0

Villa Gargano is back

The pizza ovens are fired back up at Villa Gargano, and for a good reason: they are open again. The iconic Albany Italian restaurant is ramping up service for guests as they continue to reopen.

The scene on the last Friday night of July looked like this: customers standing sitting in the lobby, pizzas been pulled from the oven, cut, and put into boxes for carry out.

Thankfully, this isn’t temporary. Owner John Gargano confirmed with 229 Life that the restaurant is serving carry-out pizzas currently, and adding salads to the available menu starting Saturday July 29th. He said they aim to progress even further into the coming weeks and months.

“We’re back,” he said after describing their current progress. John did note their phones were not working at the time, and they were working on getting that fixed. With that in mind, he joked they could use the lower volume of customers to practice everything as the restaurant continues.

The restaurant has adopted a half-week schedule as they move forward, with plans to operate Wednesdays through Saturdays as they wish to expand availability later. The restaurant took orders until 8pm on Friday, July 28th.

Until the phone service is restored, anyone wishing to place an order will need to stop by the restaurant’s location at 1604 N Slappey Blvd. in Albany.

From the waiting area the main dining room was all set with tables and chairs – just in the dark. Restaurant management did not say when they might be able to reopen the dining room.

But the kitchen remained somewhat busy with in-person orders coming and going for the night. Gargano was willing to give updated information in the moment while in the kitchen, but didn’t stop working while he shared details of the restaurant.

Villa Gargano memories

With the renewed excitement around Villa Gargano, we reached out to the community and asked if they had special memories from the iconic Italian restaurant. Here are some of the stories they shared.

The proposal story

In 1999, I think, my son enlisted John to help him propose to his girlfriend. He took the ring by the restaurant ahead of time, and left it up to John to come up with a plan. When the time came, John made sure they were seated at a table so that the girlfriend’s back was to a free standing screen. If you’re familiar with the Villa, you know the table. John climbed onto a step ladder and lowered the ring, on a string, feeding it off the end of something, maybe a yardstick. It worked — she said yes!

The recovery story

In January of 1993 my husband suffered a massive stroke. He was sent to Palmyra hospital for rehab. He was there for 3 months. This was one of the hardest times of our life. After several weeks of him diligently working to regain strength and to transfer from a wheelchair to a car seat he was given a pass so I could take him out to dinner. We went to Gargano’s. It was an extreme struggle but we made it inside. We dined on lasagna. It was wonderful. The first glimpse of real recovery for a very proud man. During his continued rehab we were able to return several times. The service and food were always excellent. In this dark and unsure time in our lives Gargano’s was a blessing that we enjoyed very much. He did survive the stroke and was left with the left side of his body paralyzed. His name was Wayne Jacobs. We lived in Omega. In 2007 he passed away with heart failure. Thank you for this very special memory. It made a difference in his recovery.

-Fran

Thanks to everyone who submitted their own stories!

BIG PROJECT: Grand Island Park To Feature New Skating Rink, ‘Top Golf’ Like Experience

One of the biggest recreational projects to come to the Albany area is official, and it’s called Grand Island Park. The new indoor-outdoor facility will be like nothing the area has seen before. This article takes a look at what it includes, what it will be like, and when people can expect to visit.

Grand Island Park will sit on the former Grand Island Golf Course property, taking advantage of its expansive acres of space.

And the park will need much of that space, as it will include a new indoor skating rink, 12 pickleball courts, a patio area with food and refreshments, and a gamified golf driving range with a restaurant, delivering a ‘Top Golf’ like experience.

Grand Island Park will be built by Grand Island Group LLC, co-founded by Terry Ho and John Senkbeil. It is scheduled to open its doors in 2024.

The Skating Rink

Before the announcement, the community was still feeling the sting of the recent and sudden closure of Stardust 2, the area’s only skating rink. But now the landscape for family fun looks a bit different.

Grand Island Park’s on-site skating rink is set to bring back the fun and nostalgia of skating in an all-new facility. The skate center will include party rooms and a game room.

“Although it’s a brand new facility, we will not go up on price! I want it to be affordable just like before!” Terry Ho told 229 Life in a statement.

Pickleball Courts

In addition to the skating rink, Grand Island Park will include 12 pickleball courts. Six of the play courts will be covered and the other six will be uncovered. Visitors will be able to purchase play passes or memberships for use.

Golf Gaming Facility

Likely the most anticipated feature of Grand Island Park, a golf gaming range similar to ‘Top Golf’ is planned for the property. It is expected to have 15 to 18 bays for players with dining service available at each one. Gameplay will feature state-of-the-art technology for those at the range.

In a joint statement, developers said while the scale of the facility will be smaller than its metropolitan counterparts, the innovation and quality will be unparalleled.

Site Development

Grand Island Park is a complete reimagining of the old Grand Island Golf Course, which closed its doors to the public in 2016. The property, which sits within the bounds of Lee County, was originally closed and rezoned for commercial use by county administrators. The county wanted to build a hospital there, but those plans did not go as expected. Since the original property is so big and Grand Island Park is only part of it, Lee County could still build on the rest of the land in the future.

According to Grand Island Group, the park will be built in phases, the first including the skating rink and golf gaming facility. Current documents show the pickle ball and wiffle ball features would come in subsequent phases.

Developers hope Grand Island Park’s initial phase will serve as a catalyst for future entertainment developments in the area. Details are still being finalized for the project.

Terry Ho and John Senkbeil said they envision transforming the region into a premier entertainment hub, “allowing local residents to enjoy a diverse range of leisure activities without having to travel long distances.”

They also provided the following mission statement for Grand Island Park:

“Our mission is to preserve and nurture our beloved park, transforming it into a safe and welcoming sanctuary for all citizens. We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy these beautiful venues free from the fear of crime or drug-related issues. We strive to create an inclusive and judgment-free environment, where all citizens can find solace and joy without any concerns. Through collective efforts, we aim to enhance the quality of life in our area, fostering a sense of community and unity among our residents.”

Where Are The Speed Cameras In Albany, GA?

After a series of research, meetings, and votes, the City of Albany decided to add speed cameras to its traffic enforcement efforts. But where are the speed cameras in Albany, GA? This article provides a comprehensive list and map view of where the speed cameras are and which way each one is pointed.

How does it work?

The collection of cameras are built and monitored by RedSpeed, a company that takes a revenue share of the citations issued by each municipality that uses their system. The revenue share in Albany is set at 35% to the company and 65% to the city.

Each camera outpost works by using a combination of speed monitoring equipment and video and photo cameras. If a camera determines that someone is traveling 10 miles per hour or more above the posted speed limit in an area, it will record pictures and video of the violating vehicle and its license plate. Each camera is designed to record the color, make, model, and license plate of a recorded vehicle.

After a violation is recorded, the system automatically determines the owner’s information based on the license plate. Then it sends a citation to them in the mail. Each citation can range in cost from $75 to $180.
