Things You Should Do At The Southwest Georgia Regional Fair

0

The Southwest Georgia Regional Fair is Albany’s classic Fall event, featuring live entertainment, food, rides, and games for the whole family. Hosted at the Exchange Fairgrounds in Albany, Georgia, the fair’s annual return has been a staple of this South Georgia community.

The six day event promises more than rides and entertainment. Competitive cooking, artists from the area, and students caring for prized animals bring new life to the fair each year. So what should you do? Here’s our take on some Southwest Georgia Regional Fair necessities.

Ride the rides (obviously)

There’s no official count on how many rides you should take part in, but please climb into some of them, if you can. It’s the most iconic and visual part of the experience: being lifted into the air on flying swings or being flipped upside down – over and over again until you get sick. Ah, the memories. Who’s ready?

Enjoy the entertainment

It can be easy to get lost in the whirling rides, flashing lights, and incessant carnival music playing across the fair, but there’s more to it than that. Stages are set and artists have arrived to entertain audiences with music and more. Take a moment to plan out time, visit, and enjoy these entertainers. You’ll be glad you did.

Eat the food

Fairs are generally associated with deep-fried everything, but the experience isn’t just about those delicacies (see what I did there). It’s about visiting that food truck you love but haven’t been to in forever or trying out a new place you’ve never heard of and realize you love it. It doesn’t have to be a lot, but sample the eats while you’re at the fair. Most of it is only around for a few days.

Appreciate the art

Each year, a number of local and regional artists come to the fair to showcase their art and many offer items for sale. Take a look at what’s on display from people you might recognize. Exploring art is a different kind of happiness, so get your fill while you can.

Celebrate students and animals

Is it really a fair without livestock? Or your local 4-H? Fortunately the Southwest Georgia Regional Fair does include livestock exhibition animals and the people that care for them. Swing by the livestock area to celebrate the hard work many students have put into caring for their animals and the results they have achieved. Also, baby goats are cute.

Recognize the community around you

In general, the fair is a popular, fun, and affordable event that’s family-friendly. Which means most everyone shows up at some point, which is a good thing. It brings so many people from so many places together for one reason: seasonal local fun. So say hello to the people you know, and be kind to the people you don’t. Because you never know when you’re going to make a new friend.

What’s your favorite part of the fair? Share your thoughts in the comments.

We Live Here: Inside Albany’s Coffee Scene

0

The number of coffee shops in Albany is growing, so it makes understanding the coffee options that much more important. Let’s take a look inside Albany’s coffee scene.

The Morning Cafe

The Morning Cafe in Albany, GA.

Albany’s newest coffee destination on this list is The Morning Cafe. Opened to the public in summer 2023, the location is in the left corner of the shopping center on the north end of Nottingham Way, next to Buffalo Wild Wings.

The locally owned coffee shop offers espresso, drip coffee, breakfast sandwiches, and a variety of sweets. Thanks to its location on the left corner of the shopping center, The Morning Cafe also has drive thru service.

Once inside, guests will find a calm and inviting atmosphere, with plenty of space and comfy seating.

Elements Coffee (Ledo Rd)

Elements Coffee Co. in Albany, GA.

On the edge of the Dougherty County line on Ledo Road in North Albany, Elements Coffee is a cornerstone of Albany’s coffee scene.

The coffee shop has an open atmosphere with lots of seating, and has an ambience that’s a bit more quiet than the others. The location offers a variety of coffee, food, and draft beer for guests.

Starbucks (Dawson Rd)

Starbucks Coffee in Albany, GA.

In Northwest Albany, the full-service Starbucks is a key part of the city’s coffee scene, even if part of a global chain. This location features a drive thru, mobile ordering, ample indoor seating, as well as outdoor seating.

As one of the newer members of Albany’s coffee scene, this Starbucks location was the first Starbucks with a drive thru in a 90 mile radius when it opened.

There are two other Starbucks locations in Albany, operated by a third party. These locations are at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital’s Main Campus and inside Phoebe Meredyth on Meredyth Drive.

These two locations are not full service entities but make the majority of the same drinks and accept Starbucks Cards.

Dunkin’ Donuts (Dawson Road)

Dunkin’ Donuts in Albany, GA.

Just down Dawson Road from Starbucks in Northwest Albany is the full-service Dunkin’ Donuts. The location is inside of a former bank. But the roomy square footage and built-in drive thru design of the property make it a perfect fit.

The shop delivers everything you expect from a Dunkin’ Donuts chain: hot food and donuts all day, coffee and espresso items, and mobile ordering and payments.

There is one other Dunkin’ Donuts shop in Albany located near Downtown on W. Oglethorpe Blvd. This location is connected to a Homerun Foods gas station and convenience store, but has a drive thru and ample seating inside and outside of the shop.

Bob White Coffee Company (Meredyth Dr)

Bob White Coffee Company in Albany, GA.

In an old Piggly Wiggly parking lot on the corner of Westover Blvd and Meredyth Drive stands Bob White Coffee Co. It’s in a corner of the lot close to the intersection. Anyone familiar with Albany for the last few years may recognize this as the old Elliano’s Coffee shop.

This small, double-sided drive thru coffee shop serves up a variety of food, coffee, and espresso items right to the window of your car.

Temp Coffee And Brew (US 19)

Temp Coffee on US 19 in Leesburg, GA

This place isn’t technically within the Albany city limits, but there are two locations and it’s close enough to make this list. On U.S. 19 in Lee County, a major artery into Albany, Temp Coffee and Brew serves espresso, coffee, and small bites. Let’s dig in.

The coffee shop is connected to a convenience store but has dedicated baristas that work there each day. In addition to hot and cold coffees, nitro cold brews and espresso, Temp also serves hot and iced tea, boba tea, and draft beer. The shop offers charcuterie boards to order from the menu during select hours as well.

Its second location offers a similar experience for residents in the West Albany area, located at 1900 Weymouth Drive in Albany.

Cornerstone Coffee + Co.

Cornerstone Coffee Co. in downtown Albany, GA

Albany’s only downtown location on this list is Cornerstone Coffee Co. Opened to the public in fall 2021, the location resides on the corner of Pine Avenue and Front Street, right across from the Flint Riverquarium.

The locally owned coffee shop offers espresso, drip coffee, and small bites. The location is also unique in that it is a “cashless” business, meaning that it only accepts payment via debit and credit cards and digital wallets.

The inside of the shop is bright and inviting, with lots of room for indoor and outdoor seating.

For those that don’t know, Ross is a discount store where every visit is like a treasure hunt. You never know what you’re going to find next, and honestly it’s exciting. High five, Ross. Here’s a look at what we found in the seasonal section of our local store.

Tuxedo Skeleton Greeter

When walking into the seasonal section of Ross, nearly anything is possible. And then you meet this guy. A proper skeleton in a tuxedo, top hat, and bowtie waiting to greet you. Works every time.

Then around the corner was the selection of kitchen towels. This set of 2 stood out the most. Wine not?

I found this distressed Halloween decoration/paperweight smiling at me nearby. Nightmare before Christmas fans will likely approve.

Day Of The Dead Salt & Pepper Shakers

But then I began to see some of the best Day of the Dead accessories I didn’t realize I needed. Like this colorful matching salt and pepper shaker set.

Day Of The Dead Cat Skeleton Carpet Runner

Or perhaps what I really needed was this Day of the Dead cat skeleton carpet runner. Yep, that’s exactly what I need.

Day Of The Dead Fabric Skull Placemats

Then I saw the placemats. More Day of the Dead designs in wonderful colors. These fabric placemats come in a set of 2. Check!

Day Of The Dead Spill-Friendly Placemats

These spill-friendly Day of the Dead placemats came in a 4-pack. I should probably just go ahead and get them all.

Where My Witches At Throw Pillow

Oh, but then I came across the pillows. This soft one had some Halloween sass. Does purple look good on my couch?

The Black Hat Sisterhood Decorative Halloween Sign

This fun sign of “The Black Hat Sisterhood” continued the witches theme.

‘Till Death Do Us Part’ Day Of The Dead Couple Throw Pillow

This pillow featuring a Day of the Dead couple was beautifully embroidered reading, “till death do us part.”

‘Fang-Tastic’ Pets and Pumpkins Soft Throw Blanket

What’s Halloween season without a soft blanket to curl up in? This “fang-tactic” throw blanket featuring pets popping out of pumpkins should do the trick.

Day Of The Dead Kitchen Towels

Coming back around the section I found these colorful Day of the Dead kitchen towels in a 2 pack. 10/10.

Halloween Themed Pet Harness

Not to be left out, this arrangement of Halloween-themed dog harnesses was waiting nearby.

BONUS: Day Of The Dead Figurine

Just as I was leaving, I found this little Day of the Dead figurine of a couple in mid-song. Sold. More please!
